From my FYP: Tutorial by Kristen Pine @barnandpetal TikTok Reflection is more than just looking back on what has happened; it is an intentional practice of processing experiences, considering outcomes, and imagining possibilities. When approached thoughtfully, reflection becomes a tool for growth. It transforms experiences into actionable insights. I like to think reflection is a forward-moving practice that seeks solutions, growth, or improvement. It’s about taking lessons from past experiences and using them to create a better future. Reflection is not the same as rumination, which traps us in the past, replaying missed opportunities or mistakes without resolution. Where reflection acts, rumination stands still. Reflection can take many forms, and each team may find a method that works best for them. Anita and I use a “post activity report” to document thoughts, identify patterns, and clarify intentions after an event or project. After we both complete the report, it helps to hold a debrief, or lessons learned meeting, so we can deepen our understandings while we talk through the experience.
We make reflection a regular practice for Reach Partners too. We added an agenda item to our weekly meetings. “Wins, gaps, and perspectives” nurtures awareness and action, plus adds a moment of celebration when we notice our good work too. While reflection requires a little time and regular space, it also calls for emotional vulnerability. You need a measure of humility to acknowledge there are areas for growth, some courage to face challenges honestly, yet kindness toward yourself and others. To use reflection for improvement, you also need some optimism that there is a potential for change, creativity to imagine new solutions, and the will to turn insights into progress. In a fast-paced world, reflection is a precious gift. It offers clarity amidst chaos, understanding amid uncertainty, and the opportunity to grow better versions of ourselves and our teams. –Rachel
