Strategies for Getting Unstuck

We've all been there – staring at a project that should be moving forward but somehow isn't. Anita and I call this feeling "spinning," and it's one of the most frustrating experiences in professional life. Whether you're physically drained, mentally stretched, or working at the edge of your expertise, being stuck on something you know has value feels awful.

I've kept a sticky note on my monitor with simple wisdom about how to break free from project paralysis: "What is my understanding of the task? What do deliverables look like? What are the first 3 steps?
Break the Cycle
When I notice that feeling of spinning, I pause and give myself permission to feel whatever comes up: frustration, annoyance, even panic. These feelings are information, not failures.

Sometimes the best thing I can do is step away and work on something completely different. It’s called strategic procrastination. I intentionally avoid the stuck area while I draft a blog post, tackle a different project, or handle administrative tasks. Often, when I stop forcing a solution, my subconscious mind continues working on the problem in the background.

Find the Problem
Getting unstuck requires honest self-assessment. I've learned to ask: Am I avoiding this work for a reason? What happens if this project stays stalled? Who else is affected? What opportunities am I missing? What are the consequences of completing the project (or not).

A trusted partner can be invaluable. I seek Anita when I need help to work through what's really happening. Together, we use that sticky note framework to diagnose the real issue.

First, we examine my understanding of the task itself. Often, what feels like being "stuck" is actually confusion about what I’m trying to accomplish. We zoom out to review the project's purpose – why does this work matter and for whom? What does success look like?

Next, we get concrete about deliverables. Clear, specific outcomes create momentum.

Finally, we identify the immediate next steps. These steps do not represent the entire project roadmap, just the first three actions. This creates forward movement without getting bogged down in too many details. We clarify who's responsible for what task, and we identify any missing resources like time, technical expertise, or external support.

Reach Partners Can Help You Get Unstuck
Just like I go to Anita for help, you can turn to Reach Partners as your strategic partner for getting unstuck.

Leaders hire us to break through the barriers that keep valuable initiatives stalled because of any number of familiar challenges. For example, there may be a lack of:
  • Capacity – too much work, not enough hands or time
  • Collaboration – teams working in silos instead of together
  • Integration – diverse work groups or organizations not connecting effectively
  • Experience – missing the expertise needed to navigate complex challenges
  • Structure – unclear timelines, roles, or deliverables creating confusion and inaction

We will help you step back and gain perspective. Together, we'll clarify your understanding of the task, define what success looks like, and identify the deliverables needed. Sometimes an outside perspective is exactly what's needed to see what's been hiding in plain sight.

When you're spinning your wheels, we will help you zoom out to review the bigger picture. Why does this project matter? Who benefits? What's the real goal? We will work with you to reconnect with your project's purpose and realign your approach accordingly.

Our specialty is breaking down overwhelming projects into manageable, concrete steps. We don't just hand you a generic project plan. We work with you to identify the actionable steps that will get momentum flowing. We’ll provide structured accountability with regular check-ins and progress reviews.

Stuck projects often lack crucial resources. We will help you identify what's missing – whether it's additional time, technical expertise, budget allocation, or team capacity. And we’ll develop strategies to secure what you need.

We’ll also help you to identify other barriers that keep your work from moving forward: unclear roles, competing priorities, or communication breakdowns. We will clarify who's doing what, establish clear ownership, and create systems for ongoing coordination.

Getting unstuck doesn't have to be a solo struggle. Whether you're a business owner with a strategic initiative that's stalled, a team leader with a project that's lost momentum, or an organization with multiple initiatives that seem to go nowhere, Reach Partners brings fresh eyes to help you move forward.

We don't just identify problems; we roll up our sleeves and work alongside you to solve them. Reach out and let's get your important work back on track.
