Reach Partners will join the community to show support for hundreds of charity runners who will race for a reason with our donation on May 5, 2014 during Marathon Monday, a 24 hour-give-a-thon. While both of us are participating during Marathon Week, we feel it’s important to show financial support for some of the many charities who change the face of the Fargo-Moorhead community. The give-a-thon is an opportunity to raise awareness about the organizations, identify new donors, and secure more money for missions the charities serve. The 24-hour time frame seems like a sprint, but success requires a marathon effort before, during, and especially after to build on the accomplishments of the Fargo Marathon Charity Teams.
Thanks to the Dakota Medical Foundation and Impact Foundation for their work in developing the infrastructure for giving during such a large and all-encompassing community wide event as Marathon Monday. The Fargo Marathon has set a goal of raising $200,000 for the 30 Fargo Marathon Charity Teams that go the distance to alleviate hunger, find cures, provide underprivileged kids with shoes, shelter and much needed support. Do you have a family member that is a survivor, has a special need, or benefits from the charity you’d support financially? Those personal reasons are another strong inspiration to participate in a race event as a Charity Runner. Thinking about the people or children that benefit from the money you raise may provide the needed extra encouragement you need to get up and out the door to train for your race.
Some people love the great feeling of camaraderie they get when they are a part of a team. Many Fargo Marathon Charity Teams give shirts or hats to Charity Runners so that the runner looks and feels like a member. Team-up with family, friends or co-workers to train together, raise money together and run together. It’s worth the mention that money you give to charity does have a tax benefit. Check with your tax professional on what a tax deduction can mean for you. Whether you raise $150 or $10,500 you can’t dismiss the feeling you get after 3 or 26.2 miles –however fast or slow it goes – that overall self-satisfaction that you got off the couch, you beat the bystander, you put one-foot in front of the other and you did it all for someone else. All of the ideas in the world won't change the balance of leadership without action. But sometimes action seems daunting without guidance. As suggested within the Woman's Fund conversations, a mentor is a powerful relationship that can be a place to explore, learn, and foster a budding leader.
Jenni Luke, CEO of Step Up Women’s Network provides a broad definition of what a mentor is and does. Each of us at Reach Partners certainly have the traditional archetype of a mentor in our lives but also have people who come and go who have helped process career choices and decisions. Having a mentor and being a mentor are invaluable experiences. Become a mentor or find a mentor. As Ms. Luke states, don’t go in with, “will you be my mentor?” start by asking someone you admire for a coffee date or if you see potential in a person reach out to them to grow the relationship. As the project manager, I was hired to efficiently distribute thousands of personalized and sized jackets at several employee picnics, across cities and locations within the company’s northern region. Another Project Manager, an Intel researcher and I stood on the lawn to visualize how people would flow from the work place or parking lots, to the employee picnic, , to the distribution area and finally back to work. Distribution had to be under a tent–it was a hot July–and, what if it rained? We devised our plan right there on the lawn of one location: using 16-20 volunteers, we would distribute jackets in alpha-order from shelves; just like your library. I worked with the jacket company to alphabetize the jackets based on location, neatly wrap and label each with the name of its new owner. Large signage made it easy to direct employees to the jacket tent, volunteers assigned to the rows, tables and jacket shelves (boxes) set for easy identification of owner to jacket. Jacket boxes wrapped in blue plastic table cloths (from a roll) reinforced a new brand, made it neat, organized and attractive all day long. Sure, that distribution was fairly simple. Subsequent distribution was made complicated by the sheer number of employees (8,000), jacket styles, sizes, employee locations and order dates. Due to order volume, not all of the jackets were complete by employee picnics. Volunteers received lists of all orders to confirm distribution. To minimize returns, key messages for the volunteers, and pre-order and post-order emails were clearly defined along with a manner by which to troubleshoot wrong sizes or styles. Each employee received a neat package, a gift jacket through the thoughtful care of their employer, made possible in part by Reach Partners. Was it the only solution to the jacket distribute dilemma? Probably not, but it worked well and we all looked good doing it. Anita, Reach Partners In our work, the solution is a part of the job and often that means connecting people. One of the most memorable requests for a solution came from a client who regularly produces commercials. In this instance, they had hours until a scheduled shoot. They had produced the script, cast the talent, ordered props, and the production team was scheduled and ready to go. Due to unforeseen circumstances, one major element of the set was missing: the walls. I got a call from the project manager assigned. She stated her need, “We need the materials for interior walls, constructed and installed at the set by eight AM.” I replied, “Give me 20 minutes and I’ll call you back.” I found the solution in half of the time. It took 10 minutes to make the connection and confirm the builder, materials and delivery. The set walls were delivered right on time.
