Who's on your short list?

Wait. Do you have a short list?

Do you have a short list of vendors, subcontractors, and amazingly talented people? Not a legion of everyone you know, but key go-to-people who know how to produce just what’s needed and can save your butt. Maybe some have been referred by stakeholders, tested and approved. Perhaps you’ve been in the trenches together, developed workflow, synced a short hand and can skip the formalities to get to the goods. You are connected.

What if you need walls built in a day? Promotional items ordered yesterday What if your hair dresser moves to Texas? Who are you going to call? Lawyer. Editor. Fix-it Gal. Restaurant. Graphic Designer. Printer. Masseur. Yogi. Accountant. Cook. The Perfect Venue. Web Specialist. Writer. Publicist. Talent Agent.

Mentoring

10/15/2013

This week we say farewell, good luck and best wishes to our student worker, Lexi, who served as administrative support for the last 14 months. Lexi is moving-on and headed into a paralegal internship - her last step in completing her degree.  Although Lexi came to Reach without much practical experience, she leaves with new skills in bookkeeping and a proficiency in dealing event registration. Of course I want Lexi to spread her wings and fly (do you hear faint sounds of Kelly Clarkson’s “Breakaway”?), but I will miss her, her easy laugh, squeaky sneezes and youthfulness.

Working with Lexi reinforces my passion to mentor students. I love to share meaningful experiences that demonstrate the variety of work in the real world, share real-time steps in project management and provide an experience to see how small business works. One of my strengths is that of a Developer which means I recognize and cultivate the potential in others, look for ways to challenge and stretch them and celebrate improvements no matter how small (learn more at Strength Finder).

Any business can provide an opportunity for a student worker. Career centers at post-secondary schools are often looking for ways to connect students in the community and for student intern placement opportunities. Whether you hire a student worker for 5 hours or full-time, paid or unpaid, a week or a semester, for credit or not, many options are available and career center staff are willing to assist. I am certainly grateful for all the student interns and workers that have been a part of Reach Partners over the years from Concordia, NDSU, MSUM and Globe University.

Thanks for your work Lexi and the very best wishes to you!

AV Napkins

It’s a problem that plagues many meeting rooms in America – the best hotel conference rooms are not exempt. Across this great land there are 1,000’s of projectors whose little riser legs have been broken - threads now bare and unable to raise and lower still-working projectors.

Thousands potentially face a long seminar, training or board meeting with the PowerPoint images akimbo, all whacked out, lurched sideways.

It is a condition that is simply unacceptable.

Presenting the AV Napkin. Yes, you too can turn a pile of napkins into a trusty tool for every media production professional. Use them to raise a projector in incremental measurements and when you’re done, wipe the sweat off your brow.

AV Napkins – get yours today!

Reinforce Your brand At Your next Event

10/1/2013

Reach Partners coordinates many events in hotel conference rooms and similar venues.  During the program portion of an event, all eyes are on the speaker who is likely behind the podium or standing next to it so it’s worthwhile to post about podium signs.

Often the venue has their own branding name and or logo on the podium. Looking their name does nothing for your event or hosting organization’s brand. An inexpensive branding opportunity is to create a podium sign with your logo and cover up the venue’s permanent sign.  Then, each posted photo or tweeted Instagram of your speaker or emcee includes your brand.

Yes, I’ve forgotten this important step but I vow not to have that happen again.  I hope you are with me in agreeing to make podium signs for all your events.

Tips For Your Next Podium SiGN

  • Call the venue or measure the size of the front of the podium.
  • The sign will attach better if it’s just a bit smaller in size than the podium. Some venues have rules about what kind of tape to use. Be nice and follow them.
  • Keep it simple: plain background with the logo or name.
  • Make your logo or name as large as possible so people in the back of the room can clearly see your brand.
  • Don’t add messages or decorations to the sign. Additives take away and diminish the clarity of your brand.
  • Print enough podium signs for each podium if multiple rooms are used.
