Mentoring

This week we say farewell, good luck and best wishes to our student worker, Lexi, who served as administrative support for the last 14 months. Lexi is moving-on and headed into a paralegal internship - her last step in completing her degree.  Although Lexi came to Reach without much practical experience, she leaves with new skills in bookkeeping and a proficiency in dealing event registration. Of course I want Lexi to spread her wings and fly (do you hear faint sounds of Kelly Clarkson’s “Breakaway”?), but I will miss her, her easy laugh, squeaky sneezes and youthfulness.

Working with Lexi reinforces my passion to mentor students. I love to share meaningful experiences that demonstrate the variety of work in the real world, share real-time steps in project management and provide an experience to see how small business works. One of my strengths is that of a Developer which means I recognize and cultivate the potential in others, look for ways to challenge and stretch them and celebrate improvements no matter how small (learn more at Strength Finder).

Any business can provide an opportunity for a student worker. Career centers at post-secondary schools are often looking for ways to connect students in the community and for student intern placement opportunities. Whether you hire a student worker for 5 hours or full-time, paid or unpaid, a week or a semester, for credit or not, many options are available and career center staff are willing to assist. I am certainly grateful for all the student interns and workers that have been a part of Reach Partners over the years from Concordia, NDSU, MSUM and Globe University.

Thanks for your work Lexi and the very best wishes to you!
